AJUSA improves the instructions to replace camshaft

The AJUSA camshafts program is the most complete in the market and now has improved its manual of change. It details the basic steps of disassembly and assembly of the camshaft in the engine.

Ajusa launched this camshaft product line in 2002. At present, the AJUSA catalog contains more than 1,500 references. To provide a more precise service to the user, AJUSA has improved the manual of change and assembly that includes this product. AJUSA facilitates the change of the camshaft by following these basic steps:

  1. Place cylinder no1 in TDC and check that the camshaft is in phase.
  2. Immobilize the engine.
  3. Take out the timing belt and cylinder head accessories which are actioned by camshaft.
  4. Dismantle the camshaft pulley and its supports, mantaining the correct order.
  5. Dismantle the camshaft and lifters. If they are hydraulic, throw them away.
  6. Check that the supports of the camshaft in the cylinder head are not worn out.

  1. Check the status of supports of cylinder head, replacing sleeve bearing in the case of they exist.
  2. Lubricate cylinder head supports and camshaft supports with oil included with the camshaft.
  3. Assemble hydraulic lifters and camshaft over its supports. Assemble supports (each one in its position previously saved) and screw them on to the specified torque or angle. In the case of mechanic lifters, it will be with its adjustment.
  4. Place the pulley and screw the fixing bolt on to the specified torque or angle.
  5. Assemble the pulley or timing belt applying tension following manufacture’s instructions. An incorrect phasing with the TDC of cylinder number 1 or a low belt tension will cause piston contact with the valve.
  6. Turn the crankshaft manually at the engine direction and check that the camshaft turns freely.
  7. Check again the engine timing.
  8. Assemble the rocker cover gasket and components in the reverse order than them were dismantled.

Replace the camshaft when observing any of the following symptoms:

  • Scratch or wear signs on cams or supports.
  • The camshaft is bent more than 0.05 mm related to extreme support.
  • The axial clearance is bigger than 0.15 mm.
  • Replacement of head gasket.
  • Loss of power.
  • Wear of catalyst.
  • Increase of pollution.
  • Unbalanced engine.
  • Low engine output.

(ImportantIt is indispensable to replace the lifters when replacing camshafts)

  • Check the status of elements in contact with camshaft
  • (rockers, lifters, gears, etc). In case of worn, it is necessary to replace it.
  • It is recommendable replace the hydraulic lifters set (they cannot be repaired or adjusted individually)
  • Once the new hydraulic lifters have been assembled, it should not start the engine before 30 min aprox. Hydraulic lifters must be settled (some valve could stay open preventing the compression in some of the cylinders during the ignition, causing a valve settled over the piston)
  • Replace the engine oil and oil filter.
  • Check the lubrication and pressure system.
